Tate Modern : Shape Of Light exhibition
Shape of Light is the first major exhibition to explore the relationship between the two, spanning the century from the 1910s to the present day. It brings to life the innovation and originality of photographers over this period, and shows how they responded and contributed to the development of abstraction.
Shape of light reveals photography's role in a wider history of abstraction. The photographic artists in this exhibition have engaged with advances in abstract art across a range of art forms ; from painting and sculpture, to film and installations. Throughout the exhibition key paintings and sculptures reveal the changing relationship between photography snd abstract art.
Museum of London : London Nights
Fusing portraiture, documentary, conceptual photography and film, London Nights reveals the capital at night. Featuring over 200 photographs by around 50 photographers, London Nights captures the life of the city after dark.Spanning images from the late 19th century to the present, the showcase includes work by Bill Brandt, one-time assistant to Man Ray and a renowned photographer in his own right. In 1938 Brandt published A Night in London, which captured experiences of the newly electrified capital across a range of different social classes.
Echoing the mysterious, transformatory shift from evening into night in the capital, the exhibition is divided into three sections: London Illuminated, which showcases the inspiring aesthetic of the capital after dark; Dark Matters, an altogether more unnerving collection of images relating to isolation, threat and vulnerability; and Switch On… Switch Off… which focuses on the people who live and work in the city – their nocturnal work, rest and play.
