The structure in Nature
Task 1
Artist Analysis - Myhoung ho lee
Myoung Ho Lee is a young artist from South Korea, He photographs solitary trees framed against white canvas backdrops in the middle of natural landscapes. In his images, we see a tree in its natural environment but through the use of a white backdrop, the tree is separated from its surroundings. Having the white backdrop highlights the structure of the trees and allows you to see the intricate details of each branch and leaf. The white background also gives it a centre for the picture. he takes a simple natural object like a tree and separates it from its natural environment using an immense white background.
My Response
Today I went to coldfall woods to experiment with my Camera and a A3 piece of white card.Once i arrived at the woods i was instantly greeted with a range of plants and nature that i could use to replicate Myhoung Lee's work. I positioned my piece of white card behind elements of nature and took photographs using a range of angles to capture not only the nature in front of the card but also its surroundings. I also positioned my selected pieces of nature in the centre of the white card to emulate the style of his work.
Chosen Edits
this photograph shows the effectiveness of having the background of the image still in the image as it gives context to the image.
|
In this photo i took this image by placing my camera directly above the white card and the branch in order to capture the white card and the nature on it from a different angle compared to my other photographs that i took.
|
Technical Focus,Aperture and Depth of field
These images were taken in the school allotment and were inspired by Myhoung lee.
Chosen Edits
In this image i increased the ISO on my camera, this made the colours of the nature really stand out as the brightness was enhanced.
|
In this image I used the white A3 piece of card to separate this flower from the rest of its surroundings in order to resemble Myhoung ho lee's work. This allowed the flower to stand out and the camera to focus on the petals.

Task 2
Artist Analysis - Sanni Kannisto
Sanna Kannisto is a photographer who incorporates both science and nature together. Sanna Kannisto worked with lots of different exotic plants, setting them up in different ways and using different apparatus, such as clamps and tape. Her photographs show the beauty of nature, but she also includes the tools she used to achieve the image at center. Whilst archiving the species that she finds on her travels she photographs them, commenting on the "theories and concepts with which we approach nature in art and science".
My Response
Today we were provided with white backdrops and scientific apparatus and had to choose from a range of flowers in order to create an artistic representation of their natural structure show the natural beauty of the plant and also the context behind the image creation.
Chosen Edits
With these images i combined a bunch of red leaves with some wilted berries and wrapped them around the clamp to try and replicate Sanni Kannisto's work. As you can see from the images above I Incorporated different angles to try and capture different parts of the plants with the apparatus. I used a branch with bold red leaves which contrasts with the rusting metal of the clamp , and allows the plant to stand out.In the first picture i also used a small aperture to capture the complex formation of the leaves and leave the background with the clamp blurred to focus on the real beauty of the leaves. For each image i increased the IOS on my camera to make my images brighter and the colours and sharpness of the plants and the apparatus to stand out more, which meant that my images appeared more like the artists. i tried to photograph as much of the clamp as i could whilst also photographing as much of the plants as possible to show the contrast between man made structure and the structure in nature.
Dark Room photography
As an extension of this task i used the flowers and nature that i photographed in the studio to create a series of interesting photograms that demonstrate an understanding of different darkroom techniques.
As you can see from the images above, in this task i struggled with the technique on how to produce and create a successful photogram. This is because in some parts of the photogram there areas of grey smudges meant that light was exposed to the paper whereas areas of the paper that have received no light appear white.
Task 3
The structure in Architecture
In the early 20th century it was felt that the camera was the best tool to document the industrial revolution. One way progress and industry was apparent in our environment was the rapid changes happening in cities, particularly in the western world. Photographic technologies and the camera's ability to quickly capture the construction of the modern world perfectly reflected the speed and modernism of the time.Since this point, photography of the ever changing, built environment has challenged photographers to create a breadth of responses. Photographs range from documenting the construction and appearance of the architecture to creating images that present a greater concept such as globalisation.
The Everyman Cinema - Muswell hill
Everyman Cinemas is an independent network of boutique cinemas. With a passion for quality, from service of food and drink to seating and films, every cinema also has a unique bar or foyer space. Roman Polanski once remarked that “Cinema should make you forget you are sitting in a theatre”, Their cinemas do just that, they create a truly memorable experience that exceeds expectations and reaches the highest standards possible in comfort and entertainment.
In this task i was asked to go to the Everyman cinema and experiment with different ISO settings and focus on the structure of the building.

St James church - Muswell hill
The original building was consecrated in 1842, and the church was extended in 1874. The foundation stone for the current building was laid in 1900, and the completed church was consecrated by the Bishop of London (Rev. Arthur Winnington-Ingram) on 30 June 1902.
The building was gutted by World War II bombing, and the restored church was rededicated in 1952. The Church spire was completed in 1910, the spire stands 300 ft above sea level-this is how the church got the name "Church on the Hill" The tower is 21 feet square and 80 feet high. On top if this the spire rises to another 82 feet and the total height to the top is 170 feet.

Brutalist structure
The term Brutalism was derived from the French ‘Béton brut’, or raw concrete, was a term coined for the futurist architecture being created by Le Corbusier and others like him. From this label the term Brutalism was created as a way to classify this style of architecture. The expression became associated with a movement emerging in postwar British architectural offices. The architecture itself is characterized by the large size of the buildings and the use of raw unfinished concrete.
Task 4
Artist Analysis - Simon Phipps
The photography by Simon Phipps provides a unique perspective and portrays Brutalist architecture in a sensitive, realistic and distinctive manner. Phipps has spent the last 15 years photographing and documenting Brutalist and buildings in the UK, creating a survey of photographic images that demonstrate the breadth of this contentious architectural style.

Task 6
Artist Analysis - Evol
German street artist EVOL transforms banal urban surfaces into miniature lifelike buildings. He is like an urban planner, but unlike the others, he creates a city within the city. The artist uses complicated stencils and photographs to quickly transform powerboxes, and other worn urban surfaces into miniature apartment buildings or other structures. By drawing tiny balconies and satellite dishes onto the side of an electrical box, he is able to turn it into a realistic tiny skyscraper.
Using the photographs that you have taken over the halfterm holiday create a response to the work of Evol. Create a series of miniature buildings that have a link back to the urban scene the photographs were taken in. Once created set up the response in the studio and photograph the outcome. Work with others in the group to create a series of photographs that combine your different creations.

Structure of the body
The body is made up of multiple layers and has an amazingly complex structure many artists have investigated the different parts and layers that make up this unique structure
Task 7
Artist Analysis - Peter Hickley
In his series complex series Peter Hickley creates a series of hand printed cyanotypes on watercolour paper and then hand stitched thread that represent the different muscle structures of the body.
For this task we were asked to Set up a skeleton in the studio and photograph it on a white background and then take a series of portraits of our classmates. we had to then use Photoshop and other experimental techniques in order to merge the portraits with the skeletons and bones.
My RESPONSE
For my response i took a photograph of the skeletons face and a portrait of myself and using Photoshop i merged the skeletons face on top of my face to show the contrast between the bones and the face.
3 Strands of photography
First strand
Structure between nature and the face
Artist Analysis - Marcelo Monreal
This strand is inspired by the artist Marcelo Monreal .Marcelo Monreal is a brazillian college artist, creative director and graphic designer based in Santa Catrina,Brazil. He digitally splits parts of models and celebrities faces and uses the broken shapes to create portraits embellished with vibrant flowers in bloom. For him the process is about finding the true self, the concealed beauty that people
My Response
For my response to Marcelo Monreal's work I went and photographed a series of flowers and put my camera in a 'close up' mode which allowed me to capture the flowers up close and capture the detail of the flowers. I then took a series of portraits and used to photoshop to create a double exposure effect of the flowers on the face. I did this by cropping the flowers from my images and placing the images individualy on the portrait and then lowering the opacity .

Structure in the city
Artist Analysis - Jasper James
This strand is inspired by the artist Jasper James. Today, in the overwhelming and overpopulated Asian megacities, it can be hard to find individuality amongst the chaos. British photgrapher Jasper James has travelled around these places and created a beautiful project entitled "city silhouettes".These pictures add a highly personal perspective to the vast,anonymous landscapes of Tokyo. Over the past decade Jasper James, currently based in Beijing ,has lived and worked in London and New york covering assignments around the globe for the worlds leading magazines, design and advertising clients. From his series "city silhouettes" he writes;
'These photos are part of an ongoing project that i have been shooting for the past few years in various cities around Asia . Sometime in 2008 , the number of people living in urban areas outnumbered those living in rural areas for the first time in history. I thought it would interesting to shoot portraits of these city dwellers combined with the image of a cityscape.'
'The images are made in camera with just a basic adjustment in contrast and colours but no retouching. Im currently planning exhibitions of the images and looking for an interested publisher'

My Response
For my response i decided to go to the Tate modern and Alexandra Palace to take pictures of London's skyline.in order to capture more of the cities buildings, without having to zoom in ,i walked around Southbank and took a series of pictures which allowed me to take close up's of the cities infrastructure .

Devleopment
For my development i decided to use photoshop in order to create a double exposure effect of this persons portrait and the view of the city. i took an image of london's skyline and layered it with a persons portrait in order to make the image more 'personal' and to try and replicated jasper james's city silhouettes.
Structure between Nature and Man
Artist Analysis - Christoffer Relander
This strand is inspired by the artist christoffer Relander, he was born in Finland, December 1986 and grew up in the countryside of ekenas. Christoffer Relander uses his photos of nature to create a double exposure effect , he is also best known for the series of multi-exposed photographs featuring 'man' and nature.Christoffer first discovered photography while serving in the finish marines in 2008 and has been hooked ever since he first purchased his camera in 2009. his "We are nature" series revolves around the ambiguity of the relationship between man and nature.
"Reality can beautiful, but the surreal often absorbs me,photography to me is away to express and stimulate my imagination.Nature is simply the world. With alternative and experimental camera techniques i am able to create artworks that otherwise only would be possible through painting or digital manipulation is an external software"
First Response
For my response to Christoffer Relander's work I tired to incorporate elements of 'man' and nature in order to replicate his photography. I did this by using a handful of roses and photographing them alongside a light bulb to show the relationship of man vs nature.c For my development to this response i used Photoshop to show a light bulb with flowers inside of it.

second development
For my response i decided to look at the impacts of industrialisation on nature, and how industrialisation is taking over the environment and land in peoples local areas. For each location i photographed the infrastructure and urbanisation of the area, i then photographed the amount of nature in that area and combined all of the pictures together in a collage to show the contrast and the effects of industrialisation on the environment.
in this photograph i captured the industralisation and nature of this persons local area of South Bank and combined the series of images i took to create a collage using photoshop.
I took a series of photos of the buildings and nature of this persons local area of Muswell hill which and combined them to show the contrast between industrialisation and nature.
For this edit i used photoshop to create a double exposure effect of this persons portrait and a photograph of their local area.
mY response
For this response i went to a persons local area of canonbury and photographed the amount of nature in tat area and to contrast i photographed all the industrialisation such as buildings and shops and all the negative impacts such as litter, graffiti and cars which all contribute to damaging the environment.

Artist Analysis - Gilbert and George
Gilbert Prousch was born on the 17 September 1943 in San Martin de Tor, Italy.George Passmore was born in Plymouth in the United Kingdom, to a single mother in a poor household. He studied art at the Dartington College of Arts and the Oxford School of Art.they are two artists who work together as the collaborative art duo Gilbert & George. They are known for their distinctive and highly formal appearance and manner in performance art, and also for their brightly coloured graphic-style photo-based artworks.
Exhibition Visit
In order to get inspiration, on the 10th of January I went to a Gilbert and George exhibition at the white cube in Bermondsey. His pictures are violent, eerie, grotesque, lurid and crazed. They show a dream-like world of paranoia and destruction and madness. Their strange sickly colours and creeping, smashed up, absurd landscapes confront the viewer with relentless aggression.
THE BEARD PICTURES depict a world bereft of reason, in which negotiation no longer exists.Gilbert & George take their place within THE BEARD PICTURES as intense, red, staring, empty-headed and sinister versions of themselves. In some of THE BEARD PICTURES, the artists stand either in front of a barbed wire or mesh fence, or behind one.
My Response
For my response to Gilbert and George's work i decided to take portraits of people outside their houses holding a sign with the location that they live in to show their local area. In order to replicate Gilbert and Georges work in addition to taking portraits of the people, i also took full length body shots. I then edited the photos i had taken on photoshop and changed the mode of the picture into greyscale so that the images could be black and white.

First Response
For my first development i photographed full length body pictures of people outside their houses holding a sign to spell out their location. i then combined these different images together and separated them using a grid to resemble Gilbert and Georges work. After i put the images into the grid i used the dry brush filter on photoshop to create an artistic effect.
For this Response i used a combination of full body length and close up shots to create a distorted collage. To move away from the artist Gilbert and George Instead of using a grid and making each square photograph the same size and shape, i made some of the images bigger and have a different shape compare to the others. I then put a filter on the whole collage using photoshop.
Second Response
For this response I took a series of pictures of this persons local area of canonury but i decided to focus on photographing text such as any street signs, shops and graffiti. After taking these photographs i then used the pictures i had taken from different signs in order to spell out the name of their area. To do this i used photoshop to crop different letters from different pictures and combined them in one image on a new document.
Edit 3
For this response i photographed shop signs and any text that I could find in the area of crouch end. I then used photoshop to crop and cut out letters and combine them in a collage. However some of the images i took where not always in focus when i used the camera which meant that some of the text came out blurry. in order to improve this collage in the future i need to make sure my camera is in focus with the object or use a tripod so that the camera is still and to avoid shaking when taking the images.
Edit 3
For this response I photographed a series of different signs in the area of barnet, which included the names of streets, shops and any text that i could find which represented the local area of the person who is in the edits. After this i used photoshop to crop out letters from the images I had taken and rearranged them to spell out the name of that area.
Edit 3
For this response i photographed any signs of shops and text that i could find in the area of Highbury. Then using photoshop i cut out letters from the pictures i had taken in order to spell out the name of the area. After this i combined the cropped images together to create a collage.
Edit 3
For this response i photographed shop signs and and any other text that i could find in the area. After this i used photoshop to crop out letters from the images i had taken with my camera and combined the cropped letters out to create a collage that spells out the area.
